Converting Units

Use to or in or as to convert into a particular unit.

See all the available units in the Unit Reference.

The examples on this page use the dot as the decimal point (see Decimal Point & Thousands Separators).

When the left-hand side is a plain number or an expression with no source unit, in <unit> (or just the unit, with no in) attaches the unit without conversion. This works for variables, parenthesised expressions, and user-function parameters.

When mixing plain numbers with units, the nearest unit will be used automatically.

$20 + 30$50

Adding different units of the same kind answers in the larger unit, whichever order you type them in. Subtracting keeps the first unit. Use in <unit> to choose a different unit.

1 km + 300 m1.30 km
500 ml + 1 L1.50 L
1 L + 500 ml1.50 L
1 cm - 1 m-99 cm
1 km + 300 m in m1,300 m

Durations have their own rules, see Durations.

Adding different currencies answers in the last currency, and subtracting keeps the first. The results below use illustrative rates; live currency results vary with the app’s current rates.

Feet and inches, and pounds and ounces, show as a breakdown:

5 ft + 3 in5 feet 3 inches
63 inches5 feet 3 inches
1 lb + 8 oz1 lb 8 oz
20 oz1 lb 4 oz

Convert with in feet and inches or in pounds and ounces. For a decimal, write in ft or use a fraction:

5 ft 11 in in cm180.34 cm
63 inches in ft5.25 feet
1/3 ft0.33 feet

Multiplying lengths gives an area or a volume, and powers of a length work too:

CalculationResult
10m x 10m100 m²
2 m * 30 cm0.60 m²
(4 m)^216 m²
(2 km)^38 km³

Multiplying two amounts of another kind, such as 2 kg * 3 kg, shows nothing.

An implicit rate will be made when a supported unit cannot be created through multiplication:

$30 × 4 days$120

Dividing two amounts of the same kind gives a plain number, and dividing a distance by a time gives a speed. Multiply a speed by a time to get a distance:

Notes Calculator
Calculation example
CalculationResult
6 kg / 2 kg3
1200 EUR / 400 EUR3
100 km / 2 h50 km/h
50 km/h * 3 h150 km

Multiplying or dividing two different kinds of units gives the unit you’d expect, when the line is just that one step:

5 V * 2 amps10 W
2 kW * 3 h6 kWh
6 kWh / 3 kW2 hours
10 N * 2 m20 N⋅m
1 GB / 100 Mbps80 seconds
12 V * 2 Ah in Wh24 Wh

In a longer calculation such a step shows nothing. Put it in a variable first:

5 V * 2 amps * 3 h
p = 5 V * 2 amps10 W
p * 3 h30 Wh
